What trailers can I tow with my driving license in Spain?

A clear guide from Remolque.es to help you avoid mistakes

Every week, Remolque.es receives the same questions: "Can I tow this trailer with my license?" “Will I be penalized if I attach a larger tow bar?” And yes, it’s normal to have these doubts. Spanish regulations aren’t always intuitive, and mistakes can be costly in the form of fines, vehicle impoundment, and, in the worst-case scenario, an accident where the insurance company refuses to cover it. That’s why it’s worth understanding the regulations thoroughly before attaching anything.

In this guide we explain how we guide our customers in choosing the right trailer according to the type of license you have, based on real regulations.

Category B driving license: how far can you go without complications?

With the permit B (the usual car license), the key is in the Maximum Authorized Mass (MMA) . We are not talking about the "actual" weight of that day, but the maximum weight listed in the technical specifications.

At Remolque.es we always say it: the maximum authorized mass (MMA) is the most important thing. With a category B license you can:

  • Carry Light trailers up to 750 kg MMA , without additional permits.

  • To haul trailers over 750 kg , provided that the sum of car + trailer does not exceed 3,500 kg MMA .

Simple example: if your car has a maximum authorized mass (MAM) of 2,000 kg, you can tow a trailer with a MAM of up to 1,500 kg. If you exceed this limit, you are no longer within the regulations.

In our workshop, we often see the opposite: the car can pull the trailer, but legally you can't tow it. And that, if an accident happens, is a serious problem.

B96 Authorization: the intermediate step that many are unaware of

Between the B and B+E licenses there is a practical option that few people know about until it comes to us, the authorization B96 .

With it you can drive sets that:

  • They weigh over 3,500 kg,

  • but They don't reach 4,250 kg of MMA ,

  • always with trailers over 750 kg.

It's an extension of the B driving license with a practical test, no theory required. For many drivers who need a little extra leeway, it's the sensible solution. At Remolque.es, we usually recommend reviewing it when the customer is nearing the limit and doesn't want to repurchase the entire trailer.

B+E license: when the trailer is already larger

When we talk about Large, heavy trailers or demanding combinations , enter the B+E license .

This permission allows you to drag:

  • Sets that exceed 4,250 kg of MMA ,

  • and even trailers up to 3,500 kg, always within the approved limits.

We're no longer talking about "domestic" towing. These are combinations that require skill, planning, and experience. At Remolque.es, when we identify a client in this category, we carefully review the numbers: the car's technical specifications, the trailer's maximum authorized mass (MAM), the type of use, and typical routes. There's no point in taking risks.

The things they never tell you... and then they take their toll.

Anyone who makes a mistake with a trailer usually falls into one of these errors:

  • Confuse actual weight with MMA .

  • Buy a trailer "that can handle it" without looking at your license.

  • Not checking the towable mass of the car, which may even be less than that allowed by your license.

  • Thinking that "nothing will happen for a short trip".

Based on industry experience, the problem usually doesn't appear… Until the day it happens : a Civil Guard checkpoint, a minor collision, or an accident. And then everything revolves around the paperwork.

How we do this at Remolque.es

Each recommendation we make is based on three pieces of data:

  1. MMA of the vehicle

  2. MMA of the trailer

  3. Type of driver's license

Next, we match the trailer type to the actual use: road, mountain, city, boat length, type of load, or frequency of use. We don't sell "from a catalog" because we know that mistakes are costly.

Our job as trailer professionals is precisely to avoid creating wrong purchases, unnecessary penalties, and avoidable risks.

Quick summary to help you choose the right trailer based on your driving license so you don't get lost

  • Category B license: Trailers up to 750 kg, or higher if the combination does not exceed 3,500 kg.

  • B96: More margin, up to 4,250 kg total.

  • B+E: For heavy combinations that exceed those limits.

If you're unsure, stop. Calculate. And if you're still not sure, ask us; that's what we do every day.

Before towing a trailer, check the paperwork, figures, and limits. The car's horsepower doesn't decide; the regulations do. And if you want a travel companion who's already seen every possible scenario, in our online trailer store We are here to help you choose well and drive with peace of mind: legal, safe and without surprises.
